Ásahreppur district

The Ásahreppur district extends across the western portion of the Holt hillock area toward the river Ţjórsá. It is inhabited by around 140 people, most of whom earn a living from agriculture and associated industry. Highway 1, running through the district, has comprised a bridge across the river Ţjórsá ever since 1895. The site of the bridge is just west of the settlement Ţjórsártún. This was once one of the busiest places in the district. It comprised the sports area of the Skarphéđinn wrestling club, where district tournaments continued to be held until 1969. The district’s inhabitants share their northernmost highland pastures (from the Ţóristungur area north of the river Ţjórsá and down into the valley Nýidalur) with the Outer Rangárţing district. The Ásahreppur council works in close cooperation with the council of Outer Rangárţing on development and management in various areas: school maintenance, medicine, care of the elderly, etc.
